Unfortunately it seems that Sci-Mentor have changed the taste of their ever popular Premium Whey. Not only was Sci Mentor’s Premium Whey this authors favourite tasting shake it was also one of the highest selling and most popular shakes on the site. The chocolate version received rave reviews, and quite rightfully as it was extremely tasty. However about 2 months ago we started receiving reports that the formula had changed and the new one was none to special with some people even remarking it was disgusting!

Quite why Sci Mentor would mess with the formula of one of the most popular protein shakes in the UK was beyond us so we put in an email to Sci Mentor through their website. Unfortunately we haven’t heard back from Sci Mentor so having asked around at the gym over the past month or so we have managed to build up the following picture…

It seems that Sci Mentor source their ingredients from the US like many UK suppliers. However it appears that there is a shortage of the necessary ingredients that make up their old formula or a manufacture has gone out of business. Our source wasn’t sure but upon phoning up Sci Mentor he had been told that they were trying to source the necessary ingredients from alternative suppliers in order to continue with their old formula.

So, all may not be lost after all. Here’s hoping that Sci-Mentor are able to sort out these issues and start supplying the original and best Premium Whey again, sometime very soon.

Summer is just around the corner. That means its time to hit the beach or the park and reveal your honed body to the masses! However, if you’re carrying a bit of winter fat then fear not, there’s still time to whip yourself into shape and reveal those abs in time. Nothing attracts the opposite sex like a well defined stomach on girls or a washboard stomach on the guys.

Contrary to common belief, busting your gut with gruelling crunches isn’t the only key to abs of steel. Furthermore, it is impossible to burn fat just around the stomach. Fat loss is achieved equally across the body. In actual fact, the key to a toned, flat stomach is actually to get control of your body fat. By maintaining a healthy, low fat diet and doing regular cardio to strip away excess fat, you stand the best chance at getting the definition you want.

Here are our tips for getting killer abs in just 6 weeks:

Maintain a healthy, low fat diet:

- Reduce your calorie and fat intake.
A gradual decrease in calories (100-200 less per day) means you have less to burn. Avoid fatty, processed foods but make sure you get the essential fats you need to maintain a healthy diet. You can find these good fats in oily fish, nuts, avocado and olive oil.

- Get the right protein and the right carbs.
If you’re cutting out calories, you still need a healthy protein intake to get that washboard stomach. Maximuscle recommend “around 2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight per day” for a lean look. Stick to low fat, high protein sources like chicken or tuna. Avoid the stodgy, sugary carbs like white bread, cake and chocolate, and replace with fruit, vegetables and fibre-rich foods like brown rice and bran.

- Eat regular small meals.
It’s the old ‘little and often’ approach. By eating more often you should feel the need to eat smaller amounts. Supplement these small meals with fruit or protein bars.

Introduce fat burning exercises to your routine:

- Cardio is the best form of exercise for burning those unwanted pounds. Make sure you’re doing sustainable cardio like running, swimming or cycling at least 3 times a week.

- Keep up your weights to ensure you don’t lose muscle along with body fat. Resistance training 2-3 times a week should be followed by a high protein shake like Sci Mentor Premium Whey to help muscles re-build.

- Build your abdominal muscles by working your abs 2-3 times a week. You don’t have to sweat your way through hundreds of crunches, do 2 to 3 sets of 8-15 reps, varying the resistance. The abdominals are just like any other muscle in the body. If you want to add on size start to introduce weight resistance to your ab workout. Try using medicine balls!

And if you religiously follow the steps above then in 6 weeks you should be well on your way! We’ve all got abs, we just need to get rid of the fat and strengthen our abdominal muscles. Eat healthily and exercise regularly. See you on the beach..

If you are looking to lose wait this summer why not join the growing craze for fixed gear or single-speed bikes. Not only will you save a load of money on petrol or train / tube tickets, you’ll also burn loads of calories in the process helping you achieve the rock hard abs you want for the summer! The unique thing about fixed gear / single speed bikes is that the wheel turns in conjunction with the pedals meaning you can’t coast or freewheel. This means that you have to pedal even if you are going downhill and also pedal slower to slow down and stop. In fact some people even don’t have brakes.

Riding a bike at a moderate rate can burn 600 calories an hour, and if you are really going for it you could even hit 1,000 calories per hour! Not only this, you will soon find yourself developing a great set of thigh muscles. Bikes truly are a great form of cardiovascular activity and also get you from A to B.

So if you want to check out some bikes head over to bikesfixedgear.co.uk and why not take a look at the Fuji Track 2010. It’s £399.99 which on a ride 2 work scheme would cost under £300, meaning you would easily make that bake in less commuting costs over the summer!

There is lot of different opinion on the amount of reps and sets to do when working out. Expert advice varies widely and for the average gym goer it can be pretty confusing. However, there are some helpful, easy to follow steps on tailoring your exercise routine with the right number or reps and sets needed to achieve your personal goal.

How many sets?
The general advice is three to four sets per muscle group, which should be adequate for most people. The exceptions to the rule are the muscles which do not require building ‘bulk’ such as abs, and muscles which are also worked during other exercises such as forearms and calves. Make sure that you rest for approximately a minute in-between sets, long enough to be able to complete the next set but not too long so that you find it easy. If you are struggling to complete three sets, then decrease the weight or number of reps by 1 or 2 until you can achieve this.

How many reps?
It is widely accepted that lower rep ranges (6-10 reps) with a higher weight are best for building mass and better suited to body building, whereas higher rep ranges (10-15) with a lower weight are best for toning and general muscle flexibility.

In order to get the most out of your workout, you should pick a weight that requires you to push your muscles to achieve your number of reps. Then, gradually increase the number of reps at this weight over the course of your workouts until you are ready to slightly increase the weight – then take the number of reps back down and begin building up the number again. Always make sure that you are improving even if it is only by a couple of reps each time.

As with the advice on number of sets, the exceptions to the rule with number of reps are forearms and calves (which require care not to over-strain during training) and also abs (which require toning rather than mass-building and are better suited to a low weight, higher rep routine, e.g. 15-20 reps).

For safety, if you are training on your own or with weights in a dangerous position, make sure you stop 1-2 reps short of muscle exhaustion to avoid putting yourself in danger.
